With Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, having begun Wednesday evening, there are several community events taking place in addition to observances at various religious institutions around the borough. First, a celebration of the period of fasting, prayer and charity is taking place this weekend in Sunnyside.

The 11th annual Ramadan Tent Celebration, hosted by the Turkish Cultural Center Queens, will occur on the evenings of Friday, June 19; Saturday, June 20; and Sunday, June 21, from 7:45 to 9:45 p.m. under the No. 7 train tracks between 45th and 46th streets on Queens Boulevard.

Organizers at the Turkish Cultural Center have said that the affair, which acts as a hub for the borough’s Muslim community, attracts thousands from different backgrounds to break bread together. There will also be free Turkish cuisine, Sufi music and whirling dervish performances. For details, call (718) 482-8263 or visit tccqueens.org.

Next week, the Central Queens Y, located at 67-09 108 St. in Forest Hills, a Jewish community center, is also organizing an interfaith Ramadan feast to take place on Thursday, June 25 at 7 p.m. The event will have a kosher and halal meal, Turkish music, a call to prayer and a discussion of the two religions’ traditions and customs. Entry to this second-annual meal requires purchasing $10 tickets in advance. For details, call (718) 268-5011 or visit cqy.org/tickets.

At the very end of the celebratory month, on Saturday, July 18 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Sunnyside Library, will be an event called “Let’s Celebrate Ramadan Together!” wherein families can hear poems and stories about Ramadan, as well as eat goodies and have their faces painted.

The library is located at 43-06 Greenpoint Ave. For details, call (718) 784-3033 or visit queenslibrary.org.
