An Evening of Friendship, Peace and Love.
How wonderful it is to see our neighbors of different faiths getting together during Ramadan, bringing to light the true meaning of the Month of Sharing and Peace. Last weekend saw members of the Turkish Cultural Center, Queens and the Hindu Temple Society of North America get together in Flushing to share an Iftar (fast breaking) meal. This was the first time the Turkish and Hindu communities shared an Iftar, and we hope there will be many more in the future.
Dr. Uma Mysorekar, President of the Hindu Temple Society welcomed guests to the event and introduced Oguzhan Turan to speak about the meaning of Ramadan and the tradition of sharing the Iftar in the name of peace and friendship. Imam Ibrahim Sayer also spoke to the people about the importance of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Guests were treated to a short concert of spiritual, soothing Sufi music by Amir Vahab and Dr. Yusuf Gurtas, after which leaders from both faiths said the prayers before breaking fast with a vegetarian meal. It was a beautiful event with young and old from the Hindu and Muslim faiths, talking, eating, sharing experiences and enjoying each other’s company, giving truth to the ideal that it is possible to live in peace and harmony with our neighbors.
