On Sunday morning at approximately 7 am (Eastern Time) Turkish Americans woke up to the news that Turkey's Southeast Region Van has been struck by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2. Everyone ran to their phones and began calling all of their loved ones to make sure they were all fine. In the meantime trying to come up with ideas of ways to actually help out their brothers and sisters in Turkey, the Turkish Cultural Center of Queens (TCC) Women Club volunteers came together regardless of how busy they were or whether or not they had to cook, clean, work or look after their kids and decided to have a fundraiser which was held at the TCC on Friday the 28th, all volunteers began working like busy bees some trying to call and inform everyone they know, some baking cake, cookies, dessert, and much more various things to be sold and within a day or two the outcome was great. All visitors were given detailed information about the fundraiser by Mrs. Meral Baygeldi (Volunteer TCC). The center was visited by Senator Toby Ann Stavisk'y
She was very kind with her thoughts and asked whether or not we or anyone we knew or had family or friends that were directly affected.
Mrs. Deniz Ozbudak(Volunteer of TCC) updated Mrs. Stavisky about the numerous amounts of help that Turkey was receiving from many countries and Mrs. Stavisky said that is exactly how the world should be, one for all and all for one.
She had a meeting she had to go to so she was not able to stay long. Reverend Joshua Hollman was among visitors. He comforted the members by letting them know that his church members are praying for the people of Turkey. During his visit he asked whether it was ok for him to say a prayer for the victims, and of course the members were very touched to see that people from different walks of life beliefs are able to come together under a rainbow of different colors and live for the same purpose in life to live in harmony and peace. Mr. Hollman enjoyed some food and made a donation on behalf of his church. Assembly member Catherine Nolan was among the many other visitors as well. She spoke with the president Mr. Turan and was informed of the severity of the earthquake, she spoke to all of the volunteers and made sure that they knew that she was praying for Turkey and its victims. She also enjoyed some food and was very generous with her donation. The volunteers of the Women Club worked with sincerity, love and patience whether it was to make sure everything was running smoothly to making sure the purpose was met. Although Turkey is thousands of miles away it is very touching to see people from different walks of life praying for someone whom they will probably never meet.3300 dollars was gathered and will be sent to victims of the earthquake.
